From February 3rd to February 29th, I embarked on a quest to honor my mental wellness and restore my creative energy, all while exploring the beautiful landscapes of Portugal.
As a solo-traveling creative artist and wellness therapist, finding the perfect balance between relaxation and inspiration is paramount for my neurodiverse brain. Especially when navigating the challenges of traveling while black and queer – the perfect space to rest is essential.
The first week, I chose to explore Upon Angels – Adults Only, which is a luxurious wellness hotel that caters to individuals seeking a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
During my visit, I found myself amidst the vibrant streets of Lisbon, embarking on a transformative journey of self-discovery. This tranquil sanctuary, quickly became a space where I could disconnect from virtual work and engage in self-care and introspection.

Traveling can be a stressful experience, especially when things don’t go according to plan. As an autistic traveler, I tend to get easily overwhelmed after international flights, so I always try to make the necessary transportation arrangements in advance to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.
At first, my experience with Upon Angels- Adults Only didn’t start on the best note. A mix-up with airport transportation and miscommunication with the driver left me feeling frazzled and overwhelmed. All of which triggering the familiar waves of anxiety that often accompany solo travel.
I found myself panicked at the airport when my driver failed to show up to transport me back to my hotel. After speaking with the hotel receptionist, I learned that an employee had failed to relay the necessary information, leaving me without transportation.
Needless to say, I was highly frustrated and exhausted. But what happened next completely changed my outlook on the situation.

The receptionist at Upon Angels proved to be a true guardian angel, swiftly remedying the situation with grace and compassion. Their thoughtful gesture offered me an early check-in to my room so I could rest, provided me with calming tea to calm my nerves, and even gave me an outlet adapter for my dead phone (I wasn’t aware that the outlets were different in Europe than in the USA).
Despite the initial frustration and setback, the hotel staff’s cooperation and willingness to help in any way they could made all the difference. Their kindness and understanding made me feel seen and valued as a traveler, and I left the airport feeling much more optimistic and grateful.
As someone who experiences heightened anxiety in unfamiliar situations, I cannot stress enough how important it is to have supportive and accommodating staff when traveling. It can truly make or break a trip.
Throughout my visit, every detail was meticulously curated to enhance my experience, from efficient room service to personalized dining arrangements. I felt like royalty in my own private retreat.

The moment I laid eyes on the bathtub, I knew I was in for a treat. It was a grand and luxurious oasis of relaxation that beckoned me with its promise of tranquility and rejuvenation. I added beautiful eucalyptus plants and incorporated calming scents of essential oils. It was a moment of pure indulgence that refreshed and renewed me.
The bed was a circular masterpiece surrounded by exquisite lights, detailed paintings, and gorgeous rugs. The bedding was plush and comforted me, making me feel like sleeping on a cloud. The room was thoughtfully designed to provide a serene and peaceful ambiance that made it easy to fall asleep and wake up refreshed.
Although the robes provided were not the softest, the overall quality of the amenities surpassed my expectations. The refreshing shower invigorated me and provided a perfect start to each new day of exploration.

The overall quality of amenities surpassed my expectations. Although I missed an outdoor movie screening in the garden area due to a scheduled nap , the experience was a testament to the hotel’s commitment to providing diverse and enriching guest experiences.
The most remarkable feature was the hotel’s impeccable art design. The bold colors, mesmerizing patterns, and sensual ambiance exuded an air of sophistication and elegance. The outdoor spaces, surrounded by a mural celebrated femininity in all its glory! The mural signed by EstudioX, provided a serene backdrop for moments of reflection and contemplation.
